OPINION: Switching To EVs is a Psychological not Technical Challenge
Switching To EVs is a Psychological not Technical Challenge
I’ve been listening to a fascinating, but long, interview with behavioural science expert Rory Sutherland on the Everything Electric TECH channel. Rory argues that making the switch to electric is as much about psychology as it is about technology.
Based on his expert insights, here are six key pieces of advice for a smoother transition:
Solve for Anxiety, Not Just Range:
We often buy massive, heavy batteries for the 2% of trips we might take. Addressing our psychological “range anxiety” is more effective than just paying for extra range we rarely use.
Demand Better Visibility:
Traditional petrol stations are highly visible “peacocks.” We need charger signage to be just as prominent so we know exactly where help is available.
Don’t Be a Slave to Percentages:
Constantly watching a battery percentage can be stressful. We don’t need extreme granularity for local trips—just trust the car and enjoy the drive.
Try “Parallel Running”:
Moving to an EV can be a “hump.” If possible, try a two-week trial or keep your old car for a few days to get used to the new habits without the pressure
Embrace One-Pedal Driving:
Features like one-pedal driving and adaptive cruise control are “magical”. Once you try them, you’ll likely never want to go back to a manual gear stick!
Be Practical with Charging:
You don’t always need the fastest, most expensive home charger. For 95% of people, a modest home setup is more than enough to keep you topped up.
Ready to start your journey to an EV. With fossil fuel prices going up & up, now is a great time to start.
