Kia EV5

SmartGrandads View.

A GREAT VFM family BEV, but why use the 400v platform?

Having an EV6 with 800v platform, on those long journeys / holidays charging is super fast.

IMHO. With only 400v platform, the KIA EV5 has missed an opportunity to be better than the competition.

Lets see, Kia usually are “spot on”.

1. Body Style and Size Segment

The EV5 is a compact to mid-size SUV, designed with a boxy, robust aesthetic reminiscent of its larger EV9 sibling. Its dimensions are 4,615mm (length), 1,875mm (width), and 1,715mm (height), with a wheelbase of 2,750mm.

2. Platform Architecture, Range & Efficiency

Built on an electrified variant of Hyundai Motor Group’s N3 platform, the EV5 utilizes a 400-volt electrical architecture. This differs from the 800-volt E-GMP platform of the EV6 and EV9. Range varies: the Standard Range (64.2kWh LFP battery) offers approximately 400km (WLTP), while Long Range variants (88.1kWh LFP battery) achieve up to 555km (WLTP) for FWD and 470-500km for AWD. DC fast charging is capped at 141kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in around 38 minutes.

3. Technical Capabilities

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are comprehensive, including Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Smart Cruise Control 2 with Highway Driving Assist 2, Remote Smart Parking Assist 2, and various collision avoidance features. The infotainment system features Kia’s ccNC with panoramic displays (12.3-inch instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment, 5.3-inch climate control). Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality is also present.

4. Interior Quality and Storage Capacity

The interior prioritizes space and versatility. Materials include recycled PET and bio foam. Storage includes a generous 566L rear boot (expanding to 1,650L with seats folded flat) and a 44L front trunk (frunk), ideal for charging cables. The cabin offers ample legroom and headroom, with thoughtful storage solutions in the center console.

5. App Functionality

The Kia Connect app provides extensive remote control capabilities, including checking vehicle status, remote climate control, charging management, EV route planning with charging station locations, and digital key sharing. Over-the-Air (OTA) updates ensure the vehicle’s software remains current.

6. 3 Pros and 3 Cons

Pros: Spacious and practical interior; good value for money; comprehensive suite of safety and tech features. Cons: 400V architecture results in slower DC charging than 800V rivals; some reports of firm ride and torque steer in FWD variants; a relatively small frunk.

7. Overall Summary

The 2025 Kia EV5 is a compelling electric SUV, offering a strong blend of family-friendly practicality, modern technology, and a distinct design. Compared to competitors like the Tesla Model Y, the EV5 offers superior practicality and passenger comfort, though it may not match the Model Y’s charging speeds or performance. It positions itself as a well-rounded option for those prioritizing space and value in the burgeoning electric SUV segment.
