Ownership:
Suzuki Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Shizuoka, Japan. It is a public company traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TYO: 7269). While there isn’t a single majority owner, significant shareholders include The Master Trust Bank of Japan, Ltd., Custody Bank of Japan, Ltd., and Toyota Motor Corporation, which holds a 4.98% stake as of September 2024. The Suzuki family, descendants of the founder Michio Suzuki, also maintain considerable influence over the company’s management.
Brief History:
Suzuki’s journey began in 1909 when Michio Suzuki founded the Suzuki Loom Works in Hamamatsu, Japan. Initially, the company produced weaving looms for Japan’s thriving silk industry. Recognizing the potential for diversification, Suzuki began exploring automobile manufacturing in the 1930s. Despite early prototypes, World War II interrupted these plans, and Suzuki returned to loom production.
After the war, with a growing need for affordable transportation, Suzuki introduced its first motorized bicycle, the “Power Free,” in 1952. This success led to the development of motorcycles, with the first model, the Colleda, in 1954. In the same year, the company changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd., signaling its commitment to the automotive industry. 1955 marked a significant milestone with the launch of the Suzulight, Suzuki’s first compact automobile, which played a key role in Japan’s “minicar” era.
Over the decades, Suzuki has expanded its global presence, becoming a significant player in the motorcycle, automobile, and outboard motor markets. The company is known for its compact, fuel-efficient vehicles and motorcycles and has established strongholds in markets like India through its partnership with Maruti Suzuki.
