RANGE ROVER

– Ownership and Brief History

Ownership:

Range Rover is not an independent company; it is a premium vehicle lineup and sub-brand of Land Rover. Both are owned by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a multinational aerospace and automotive manufacturer headquartered in the UK. JLR itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, an Indian automotive giant and part of the global Tata Group conglomerate.

Brief History:
  • 1948: The Rover Company launched the original, utilitarian Land Rover.

  • 1970: To offer a more refined, comfortable off-roader, the flagship Range Rover was introduced.

  • Corporate Shifts: Due to shifting corporate landscapes, the brand passed through several owners, including British Leyland (1967), BMW (1994), and Ford (2000).

  • 2008–Present: Tata Motors acquired the brands from Ford, merging them into Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

Under Tata’s backing, the Range Rover nameplate has expanded into a family of distinct luxury models—including the Sport, Velar, and Evoque—while maintaining its engineering and manufacturing roots in Solihull, England.
